Career Options

Being a local reporter can be exciting, interesting and rewarding. Many people go in as trainees and love it so much they stay in the job until they retire.

But for others, it can be the kind of job that wears thin after a few years and you get to the point where the thought of feigning interest in another flower show is too much to bear.

If and when you get to that stage, it can be difficult to know what options are open to you. This section looks at some of the most popular options. But you are not limited to these choices. The good news is that being a journalist gives you many transferable skills.

Whatever you do, if you want to move within the media then try to develop a good relationship with someone who can act as a mentor to you. For example, if you cover the local council and you want to be a press officer then it can be worth developing a good relationship with the head of communications so they can give you advice on developing your career.
